Non have, e queste membra stanch'e frali
Solleva[;] a me t'envola[,] o sonno[,] e l'ali
Tue brune sovra me distendi e posa.

D'asprezza colme, o notti' acerb' e dure.

English

Oh sleep, oh of the quiet, humid, shadowy
Night placid son, oh of the mortal
Afflictions comfort, sweet oblivion from ills
So grave that life becomes harsh and tedious,

Soccor my hearth, at last, that languishes and rests
No longer, and these limbs, tired and frail,
Relieve; fly to me, oh sleep, and your dark
Wings over me extend and rest.

Where is the silence that disperses day and night,
And the soft dreams that will insecure
Vestiges to follow you have the custom?

Alas, for in vain I invoke you, and these obscure,
Icy shades in vain I flatter: oh plumes
Of harshness full, oh sour and hard nights.
